»» What is Worship? The Apostle Paul described true worship perfectly in Romans 12:1-2:
"I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, or well pleasing and perfect."
Much of what we tend to call "worship" in current culture really isnt worship at all. Rather, it tends toward self-driven and empirically-focused interest and motivation instead of being God-focused. Like going to a movie, we tend to gauge worship by what we get out of it, instead of what we offer God in our formal, public gathering of congregational worship. (And no amount of ceremony will ever impress our Heavenly Father.)
»» It is our goal to worship first in spirit. To do so requires a mind centered on God and renewed by Truth. Only when our minds are not centered on worldly things and turned to being centered on God can we worship in spirit. Such distractions will stand in the way of our true worshipa s we try to praise and glorify God.
»» We also strive to faithfully worship in truth. (John 4:23-24) To truly worship God, we must understand who He is and what He has done, and the complete and adequate revelation of Himself resides in the Bible. Worship is an expression of praise from the bottom of our hearts toward a God who is understood through His Inspired Word. If we do not have the truth of the Bible, we do not know God and we cannot begin to meaningfully have a relationship with Him in worship.
Do we fully embody this goal in worship? Sadly, we cannot begin to adequately lay claim to such a position, in the fallen state as sinners that we share as a common bond with all humanity. Nevertheless, it is the ongoing commitment and goal of Grace Community Church to not be content with worship that is hollow, repeated from rote memory, or exercised in ritual. God in his Greatness deserves so much more.
